1 / 5Invoice Ninja is an invoicing and billing app for freelancers, consultants, agencies and small businesses who want to send professional invoices, get paid online and keep track of where their time and money go. Besides invoices, it handles quotes, recurring billing, expenses, vendors, purchase orders, projects and time tracking. Every client gets a self-service portal to view documents and pay. Invoice Ninja is unusual because you can use it as a hosted service or run the same code on your own server. Every Pro and Enterprise feature is included in the public code on GitHub, where the project has more than 10,000 stars and ships updates almost daily. It started in 2014, built by cofounders Hillel Coren and Shalom Stark, with David Bomba joining as CTO in 2015. The company remains a small, self-funded team. Version 5 runs on a Laravel API, with web, desktop and mobile apps on top. Highlights: • Invoices, quotes, credits and recurring invoices with automatic reminders • Online payments through Stripe, PayPal and many other gateways • Branded client portal where customers view, approve and pay • Expenses, vendors and purchase orders, with bank transaction sync and rules • Projects and tasks with a built-in time tracker that turns hours into invoices • Custom invoice designs, multi-currency support and e-invoicing formats • Full REST API, plus webhooks for connecting other tools • Self-host with Docker or on a regular server, or use the hosted version The hosted version has a free plan with a cap on the number of clients. New accounts get a two-week trial of the Pro plan, which then costs US$14 a month. An Enterprise tier adds more users and features. Self-hosting is free under the source-available Elastic License 2.0, and a US$40-per-year white-label license removes Invoice Ninja branding from client-facing pages. There are apps for the web, Windows, macOS, Linux (Snap and Flatpak), iOS and Android, and the mobile and desktop apps also work with self-hosted servers.
