1 / 6Zed is a fast, modern code editor for developers who want an editor that stays out of the way. It opens instantly, scrolls smoothly even through huge files, and offers the features you expect from a full IDE: language servers, debugging, Git integration, a terminal and real-time collaboration. It also has optional AI built in, from inline edit predictions to agents that can read and change your code, but you can turn all of that off and use it as a pure editor. Zed comes from Zed Industries, founded in 2021 by Nathan Sobo and others from the team that created the Atom editor and the Tree-sitter parsing library. It is written in Rust on top of GPUI, the company's own GPU-accelerated UI framework, which is the secret behind its speed. The editor became open source in 2024 and has drawn a large community, with more than 90,000 GitHub stars. Zed Industries is now also building Delta, a multiplayer environment for coding with agents. Highlights: • Native, GPU-accelerated editing written in Rust • Built-in multiplayer collaboration with shared projects and following • Agentic editing with hosted models, your own API keys or local models • Works with external agents such as Claude Agent and Codex CLI • Edit predictions that suggest your next change as you type • Language server support, debugging, Git integration and an integrated terminal • Vim mode, themes and a growing extensions ecosystem • MCP server support for connecting tools to the agent Zed is free and open source, and the Personal plan is free forever with unlimited use of your own API keys or external agents. Pro costs US$10 per month with unlimited edit predictions and US$5 of included tokens, and Business is US$30 per seat per month. Zed runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.
