1 / 5ChipTone is a free tool for generating sound effects, aimed mainly at game developers but useful for anyone who needs punchy, characterful audio fast. Pick a preset like coin, jump, explosion or power-up, tweak it until it feels right, and save it as a WAV file. It is perfect for game jams, prototypes, retro-styled games and anyone who would rather shape a sound than search a library for one. ChipTone is made by Tom Vian of SFBGames, with colours, icons and logo designed by Adam Vian. It sits in a proud family tree: it was partly inspired by bfxr, which was built on Tom's own as3sfxr, itself a port of Tomas Pettersson's classic sfxr. It started life in Flash and was rebuilt in HTML5 with Haxe and OpenFL, gaining Windows and Mac downloads along the way. It is beloved on itch.io, with a rating of 4.9 out of 5 from more than a thousand ratings, and is still being developed, with a sampler and sequencer in progress. Highlights: • One-click presets for common game sounds such as coin, jump, hurt, explosion and blip • Wave, frequency and amplitude controls with an attack, decay, sustain and release envelope • Pitch and tone shaping with vibrato, harmony, FM synthesis and arpeggio modules • An effects chain with tremolo, bit-rate crush, ring modulation, wah-wah and delay • Mastering controls for EQ, compression, volume, sample rate and bit depth • Export to WAV, ready to drop into any engine • Every sound you make is CC0, free for any use including commercial ChipTone is free to use in the browser. The Windows and macOS downloads on itch.io are free too, with an optional name-your-own-price payment if you want to support the developer. Sounds you create are released under the CC0 licence, so you can use them anywhere without credit.
